My Royal Nemesis: A Joseon Villainess Wakes Up in Modern Seoul (And It's Hilarious)
Every now and then a K-drama comes along that is pure, joyful fun — and My Royal Nemesis is exactly that. This fantasy rom-com shot straight to number one on Netflix's non-English TV chart, and it is easy to see why. It takes a ruthless villainess from the Joseon era, drops her into modern-day Seoul, and lets the chaos unfold. If you loved Mr. Queen or Business Proposal, this one belongs on your list.
What Is My Royal Nemesis About?
During the Joseon dynasty, Kang Dan-shim is a cunning, ambitious woman who rises to become the king's favorite concubine — until she is accused of plotting to kill the queen and crown prince. On the day of a solar eclipse, she is sentenced to death by poison. But instead of dying, her soul travels 300 years into the future, waking up in the body of Shin Seo-ri, a struggling modern-day actress working as a stunt double on a historical drama set.
Confused and furious in this strange new world, she is almost run over by Cha Se-gye, a cold and calculating business tycoon who cares about nothing but profit. The two clash instantly. But as Dan-shim realizes that this ruthless chaebol may be the only person who can help her rewrite her fate, an unlikely enemies-to-lovers relationship begins to take shape. The result is a sharp, funny culture-clash comedy about a woman shaped by 300-year-old values trying to survive — and win — in the 21st century.

Why You Should Watch It
It is genuinely funny. The comedy comes from watching a haughty Joseon noblewoman bewildered by smartphones, modern manners, and 21st-century romance. Lim Ji-yeon leans fully into the comedy after a string of dark, dramatic roles, and the shift is a delight.
The chemistry is a highlight. Early viewers have singled out the lead pairing as one of the best rom-com duos in recent memory, with comparisons to Business Proposal and Mr. Queen.
It is easy to binge. With a fast, fun pace and a clear enemies-to-lovers arc, it is the kind of show you put on to forget your worries and just enjoy.
